An Early Morning near Yokohama

I’ve been meeting a bunch of new people in Japan and recently met a guy from San Diego who lives in Japan.  He asked me if I wanted to go out the other weekend.  It was a blast.

Took the train down to Kanazawa Bunko, met up with them, and headed to Ouji in their old Range Rover.

Messed around and some 7-Eleven convenience store for a while and watched some sweet cars roll by.

After we went to check the dead-end where the parking lot is but there was an event on and the police had blocked the road, that area has been quiet the problem lately.

At the other meeting spot a lot of cars cycled through as the night progressed.

I met Taiyo-san again and he had his JZX 100, but there was a few modifications from last time, he had swapped out the lime Gram Lights in the front for TE37’s so he was rocking a full set.

A few guys from Midnight Rose were out.  Quiet famous too, the fans were taking pictures next to the various cars.

The action almost started early, but was cut short by a tiny Kei car which scared off most of the guys.

We also got our Ecchi pozu on with the locals.  Just messing around.

Some new cars that I hadn’t seen yet like this JZX 110

Some guy pulled up in the cop car and scared the crap out of four people. But after that everyone came around and took picture and questioned him about why he had it.  Apparently it was for a drama shoot but he decided to take it out for a joyride…more like a troll ride.

Everyone relaxed after and passed the time chatting and sleeping. We hung out on the curb for little while and after we headed to the Ranger for a rest

My friend Park cycled all the way from Shibuya to Ouji just watch the drifting.  Die hard fan right there.  He kind of scared me when he knocked on the window of the ranger while I was taking a catnap.

Park and I decided to walk around and take pictures of cars while the rest slept.  Around 4:45 some people started to stir and we moved to the other street.  I called Mike and his friends to wake them up because they were sleeping in the Range Rover still.

Park and I walked down to the corner.  This is what we saw.

And a few minutes later, this is what we saw.  I think we were both pretty stoked!

Seeing a few drifts last time was pretty awesome but this again topped that experience.  We sat and watched for a solid amount of time.

Quiet a few cars from Magician and Midnight Rose seemed to be out.  They were killin’ it!

This guy was spitting flames all morning.

A lot of the drivers had their girl friends in the passenger seat.  Man I wanted to switch with them so bad.

There is a sort of fierce feeling between strangers in the drift scene that I picked up on.  It might be stronger between Japanese and Gaijin but what I noticed is as soon as the drifting starts; that whole feelings between everyone basically diminished.  A few people were hollering and lots of people chatting.  It was like all the tension built up from the night had been released as we watched the guys fly by around the turn.

Takin’ it home! The two Skylines were awesome to watch!

There were two crashes.  The Skyline hit the railing and Mark II smashed it’s rear as well.  From word of mouth: the Mark II accidentally suicide drifted against the flow and one of the other drivers came and pulled him out of the car.  There was almost a fight.

The Skyline lost both it’s bumpers and looked like a complete missile after.  It was rad!

Aside from those few incidents there was a lot of good drifting and plenty of backfires.

Oh so sexy, and this JZX squatted hard in the rear coming out of the corners when he was drifting.

Lining up after drifting and fixing up broken bits and pieces.  Chucked the rear bumper in the back and used black duct tape to secure the front.  Got to work quickly when the cops could be around the corner at any time.  Got to get home and fix it up so it can be daily driven once more!

It’s a shame I didn’t get to see Taiso San drift,  his car is fucking crazy and sounds so raw.  It’s got a mad gurgle!

I also shot a small video clip.  Its just a bunch of raw footage thrown together pretty quickly.  I am not to great with film yet so bear with me.

well that depends. u could do what theess guys? do which is probably to build their own rc car or you can get an exisitng rc nitro car with a lot of power and just replace the tires. wont perform anywhere near as well but MUCH cheaper

      Hey Chino,

For the most part, when I’m shooting close shots I use a f2.8 lens thats about 17-50mm. (I think) I have another lens as well that I use for stuff at the track and other things at greater distance. It is the 70-200 f4 continuous L series from Canon. Hope you have fun on your trip to Japan and best of luck shooting!
